All About Second Grade

Second grade is an exciting year of learning and growth. The sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist are celebrated in this grade, providing a strong core focus and link among faith, school, and family. Students will build upon the skills they’ve already mastered and implement them to further their knowledge and proficiency in all subject areas.

Second Grade Curriculum:

Religion – We will study the sacraments with an emphasis on Reconciliation, Eucharist, and the Mass. We will become more aware of our Catholic heritage. Prayer, liturgy, scripture, and morality are stressed.

Mathematics – Our program focuses on basic addition and subtraction facts, place value (counting and comparing numbers up to 1,000), addition and subtraction word problems with numbers up to 1,000), foundations of multiplication & division, measurements, money, time, shapes, and fractions as equal parts of shapes (GoMath!).

Science – We will learn physical science relating to states of matter, weather, and the solar system. We will also build upon our knowledge of life science by touching upon animal life, plant life, their habitats, and their adaptations (HMH Science Dimensions).

Social Studies – We will talk about how people live and work in communities, examples of good citizenship, map skills, and basic economics (People and Places).

English Language Arts – We will be reading both nonfiction and fiction stories weekly to build our fluency and our accuracy. After reading, we will respond to both literal and inferential comprehension questions about the text both orally and in writing. In grammar we will learn more about the structure of our English language and the parts of speech. Weekly spelling tests will help to build our phonetic awareness. We will produce informative, opinion, and narrative writing pieces following the writing process of planning, drafting, editing, and publishing (Superkids).

Arrival and Dismissal Information:

Second graders will enter through the back gym door in the schoolyard.  Every student is expected to be wearing a mask prior to entering the building and to line up “physically distancing.

Talk to your child about how far you need to keep the distance away from another person when outside.

  •
  • Let them know when you go for a walk or when we have to go shopping for food, we need to practice our social distance.
  • When outside, you can take a jumping rope to help them visualize the distance and take the rope away as it is a prompt.
  • When entering a shop, if a person comes out through the door, wait for him/her/them to go through the door, then you go in.
