Maria Turner

Mrs. Maria Turner is a lifelong parishioner of Holy Child Jesus parish, and was happy to be asked to serve on the Board when our Diocesan school transitioned into an Academy in 2014.  Mrs. Turner has seen many drastic changes at HCJ over the years where every teacher was a Sister of St. Joseph and our classrooms of 60 students were so crowded students were turned away.  She is a graduate of the class of 1958 of The Mary Louis Academy and earned a degree in Education from Queens College preparing her for a long teaching career in the Brooklyn/ Queens Diocese including several years at HCJ where her 5 children were also educated. As a parent on the Home School Executive Board, Mrs. Turner volunteered as a reading mother, tutored in the After School Program, worked with her husband for 25 years in our CYO program, taught RCIA , chaired many school and seasonal fund raisers and served as the school rep as a member of the Parish Council.

Being part of this community for so many years, along with her many years of teaching including being a substitute teacher in 20 different schools, Mrs. Turner saw strengths and weaknesses and felt she could help HCJCA not only survive, but also thrive and remain a superior school in Richmond Hill for all those seeking a rigorous curriculum in a Catholic environment. She felt absolutely compelled to be part of the new governance format mandated by the Diocese to insure that HCJ would remain open and vibrant unlike so many other schools near and far.  As a graduate, a parent and a teacher Mrs. Turner has multiple perspectives when presented with the many issues which face the Board and it was her hope to bring a sense of history, experience and first -hand knowledge as we address these challenges.
